Alphonse Mucha, an Art Nouveau Prague.
Alphonse Mucha is inseparable from Art Nouveau, even if the posters that made him famous were created in Paris. Back in Prague, his work becomes more than decorative style: it connects to Czech identity, history and his larger ambitions as an artist.
The Mucha Foundation Art Museum in Savarin Palace is the obvious starting point, bringing together posters, paintings, drawings, photographs and material connected with The Slav Epic. Then look for Mucha in the city itself. Inside St Vitus Cathedral is his striking stained-glass window.
Once you have his visual language in your head — elongated figures, ornament, typography and botanical curves — Prague's wider Art Nouveau architecture begins to read differently. Municipal House is an especially rewarding next stop.
